PRIME Minister Raila Odinga yesterday criticised the Supreme Court ruling that upheld the election of Uhuru Kenyatta. Raila who was making his maiden visit to Kisumu for the first time since he lost the petition challenging Uhuru's election, reiterated that he was still going to to remain in active politics.
Raila said he will continue playing a leading role in governance, justice and democracy in the country. "It does not mean that we lost but we respect their decision. When a cooking stick breaks, you do not stop cooking. Our reform agenda is still on course," he noted.
He said the ruling was made in favour of president-elect Uhuru Kenyatta for the sake of the country and not because CORD did not have enough evidence.
He likened the Supreme Court ruling to the biblical crucifixion of Jesus which was also done on the Easter holiday. "Pontius Pilate crucified Jesus instead of Barabbas in order to save the world. Jesus was crucified but he is alive and l am also alive even if I was crucified," said the PM amid cheers from his supporters.
At one time the crowd gave him a Bible and wanted to 'swear' him in as the President. He took the Bible lifted it up and said 'shetani ashindwe' amid cheers from the crowd. But he refused to be sworn in as president and instead urged his supporters to keep the peace.
Raila said CORD will keep the government in check to ensure that the promises made to Kenyans are implemented. "We are going to keep them in check and make sure that the constitution is fully implemented and we will also ensure that resources are equally distributed," said Raila who was mobbed by thousands of supporters.
The PM condemned the recent killing of two demonstrators by police in Kondele and called for extensive investigations. "The incident must be condemned and I want investigations done. It is wrong to use live bullets on innocent people," said Raila. Raila later opened a hotel owned by Gem MP Jakoyo Midiwo.
