My Life Is in Danger - Kalembe

By Kurgat Marindany, 21 May 2013

THE Independent Party leaders Kalembe Ndile, yesterday morning narrowly escaped death after bandits allegedly stormed his Syokimau estate home but were repulsed by his personal security.
Athi River police confirmed that one of the gangsters was arrested after he was cornered in the compound of the former assistant minister's house at 4am by Ndile and his security men.
Area police boss Charles Kiriinya said police are holding one suspect after seven others escaped into the dark. "We have one of them in custody and he confessed that they were eight in number. We are pursuing the rest in a bid to bring them to justice," said Kiriinya.
Kiriinya said the police are yet to establish the intention of the raid on the politician and asked members of the public to volunteer any information that can assist the police in their investigations.
Ndile said he was woken up in the early morning when he heard his dogs barking profusely and when he looked outside from his bedroom window he saw a man with a long machete jumping into his compound.
"I alerted my security men and they responded immediately. When we went out under the cover of darkness, the suspect appeared not to understand all the corners of my compound. We raised alarm as we went for him and on realizing that he was no match to us he surrendered," said Ndile.
The politician alerted Athi River police officers who also responded by going to pick the suspect. The police recovered two well-sharpened machetes and club.
Speaking to the press later, Ndile said the attack was politically instigated by his "enemies". He said his petition case against the winner of the Kibwezi West constituency seat in the just concluded elections was expected to start this morning and that the attack could be linked to politics.
He said his petition against the March 4 Kibwezi West MP election results is expected to be- gin this morning. He lost the race to Patrick Musimba, who garnered 17,974 votes to Kalembe's 16,975.
Kalembe was in former Prime Minister Raila Od- inga's campaign where he accompanied the Cord presidential candidate to rallies across the country. Kalembe has listed 10 grounds challenging the poll results.
