Colombe Akiwacu, 19 has been elected Miss Rwanda 2014. On Saturday 22nd ,
she won against all odds during the Miss Rwanda 2014 grand finale held
at Petit Stade in Remera, beating real competition from the first
runner-up Carmen Akineza and second runner-up Marlène Umutoniwase.
Akiwacu was crowned by Miss Rwanda 2012 Aurore Mutesi who had earlier
on given an inspirational speech about her past two years as Miss
Rwanda, the roles, benefits and challenges of the prestigious title.
The country's new beauty queen is a senior six vacation student who
emerged Western Province winner during the regional auditions.
Akiwacu won a number of other prizes in addition to the crown
including 2 million francs, a brand new car, air tickets to France and
Spain, as well as vouchers for various services.
The first runner-up, Carmen Akineza was given 1.5 million francs as
well as vouchers while third-placed Marlène Umutoniwase got the same
only with a cash prize of one million francs.
Despite the fact that the event started almost two hours late and
still ended way past the anticipated time, revelers enjoyed themselves
as evidenced by the packed stadium until the judges announced Akiwacu
winner after mid-night.
According to the organizers of the pageant, the other contestants who
did not win any prize will be given Frw 100,000 as a token of
appreciation for participation.
